My Computer Journey

IBM PS/2 By aymangold22 – Own work In Wikipedia.

I’ve been working on a computer since I got out of the Air Force in 1987. It was an IBM PS 2 connected to a spectrometer in a metallurgical laboratory in Birmingham Al. I’ve owned a personal computer since 1991. It was handmade by some guy in California and came with a 10mb hard drive. It was state of the art to be sure. I learned about the internet on that computer, which was not much more than a BBS.

BBS stands for “bulletin board system”. A BBS is a computer system that allows users to connect and communicate with each other through text-based messages, files, and other content. BBSes were popular in the 1980s and 1990s, before the widespread availability of the World Wide Web and modern internet technology. Users would dial into the BBS using a modem and could interact with other users, share files, play games, and engage in discussions on a variety of topics. Today, BBSes are mostly used for nostalgic and hobbyist purposes, although some still exist and can be accessed via telnet or the internet. ~ChatGPT

The Air Force (reserve) sent me to HTML school in 1995 and taught me the basics using printed resources from America Online (AOL). I’ve made my living on the internet in one iteration or another since 1997 and I continue to make money on it today.

People would ask me to recommend a computer and I usually would recommend a Hewlett-Packard or Dell. It used to be Gateway too, but don’t know what happened to them.

In 2007, I was a Microsoft Partner and I was creating websites with Active Server Pages, and creating relational databases using Microsoft SQL servers. I was all in with the PC and Microsoft, right? Well, no, I had also decided to produce a monthly print magazine and at the time, the professionals only used Adobe and the MAC computer.

Long story short, but I shelled out $3,000+ for a MAC Pro and Adobe Creative Suite. I used it for years to lay out and publish SOKY Happenings in Bowling Green, KY.

Fast forward to 2012, we sell SOKY Happenings and move to Tucson to start another. That isn’t going as planned and Adobe is becoming more friendly with PCs. I had purchased a good computer (PC) for my graphics designer, but after I let her go, that computer became mine.

Then my interest turned to video production and my need for a much stronger computer became evident. I considered building my own but decided it best to buy one already built. I bit the bullet and ordered one from Amazon.com! That was in 2018 and it’s the computer I’m writing this article on right now.

That was 5 years ago and I’m still using this computer every day. The bios battery just ran out last month and that’s about it. It’s been a champ and I’m proud of it.

I use it daily for web development, Photoshop, and Premiere Pro. I use it for Adobe Audition on occasion too. I fly a web-based flight simulator on it every day as well. It is strong and powerful. If I needed more, I would likely add RAM, and disk space to this one.

If I had to buy a new one, I would get this one.

I have decided to create an “Idea List” store on Amazon for my recommendations if you’re interested in any of the tech I am currently recommending there.
